Understanding Studbook Vol. 89BY AHW 1989 and sent by Joel Hedtke
There is so much information contained in studbook Volume 89 that one needs to dissect it carefully and recompile it with detail if one hopes to understand the implications of all the names and numbers that point towards where the breed is moving and where it has been. Before jumping into current trends, it is interesting to look at the historical numbers associated with the all-time leading sires and the sire-lines they represent. This list contains the names of over one hundred and fifty stallions producing more than two hundred and fifty foals in their life-time. Most people read these names and see a connection occasionally between sires and colts, but they do not see the bigger picture of how all these stallions only represent thirteen sire lines. And, of these thirteen, four lines (Ofir, Nazeer, Skowronek, and Mirage) represent over eighty-eight percent of the production for these leading sires lines. In addition to that six of the thirteen lines do not appear to be producing enough foals to even appear on the current list of stallion producing ten or more foals. The other three lines, Bairactar, Seaderich, and Rabdan El Azrak only have single representatives. This trend in the data suggests that there is a shrinking gene pool for sire lines, unless small breeders are maintaining obscure sire lines in small numbers. It is also interesting to note that from an historical perspective, one can see how the breeds most popular sire line Skowronek was superseded by Rabdan El Azrak and then the Ofir sire line. Then, all three of these lines were replaced with the Nazeer and the Mirage sire lines of today’s most popular and prolific producers. This trend’s implications for the breed are compounded considering fewer foals are being produced each year and small backyard breeders are becoming more rare.
When studying the Ofir sire line, one finds that it is represented not only in the most prolific production numbers but also in the number of stallions making it on the list of all-time leading producers. The Ofir sire line, primarily through Bask, represents 44 of the 158 stallions on the list. This sire line has produced more than 19,000 foals. Ironically though, if not unsurprisingly, not a single stallion of this line is still generating foals on the all-time sires list. However, the Ofir sire line is still active on the list of stallions producing ten or more foals a year, namely through Coltrane SS, ROL Intencyty, Afterdark H, IXL Noble Express, and H Mobility H. These numbers suggest that the Ofir sire line is most likely present in many breeders’ programs already, not as highly sought after as it once was, or not in the spot light of the show ring as it once was. The sire line that was the most popular originally, Skowronek, has also seen a decline in numbers and now ranks third in production numbers with slightly over 12,000 foals produced by the stallions on the all-time producers list.
The Skowronek or Ibrahim sire line was the first sire line to gain popularity and become prolific in programs across America. This sire line is represented by having thirty-four stallions on the list; however, of these thirty-four stallions only three are still producing on the list, Khadraj NA, Ecaho, and Buring Sand. And only two stallions of the Skowronek sire line are on the list for producing ten or more foals in this year’s studbook, Khadraj NA and Sand Tiki Special. It appears the Skowronek sire line in fading along with the Ofir line and being replaced by the two most currently popular lines, Nazeer and Mirage.
The Mirage sire line is most closely associated with the late Sheila Varian, and Mirage is mainly carried through Bey-Abi. While this sire line’s production record stands in fourth place on the all-time leading producers list with slightly over 9,500 foals, it has at least six living representatives on the all-time leading sire’s list, Sundance Kid V, Afires Heir, DA Vinci FM, Ever After NA, Audacious PS, and Odyssey SC. In addition to these stallions, it is well represented by stallions producing ten or more foals a year with fifteen stallions making the list. This number represents 28% of the stallions on the list. Keep in mind that Ofir and Skowronek sire line stallions make up less than 10% of the stallions producing ten or more foals a year. In contrast, it is the Nazeer sire line that dominates the current list of stallions producing ten or more foals a year and will soon surpass the Ofir sire line as the most prolific if the current trends continue.
The Nazeer sire line currently stands in second place on the all-time leading sires list with over 17,600 foals produced and is represented by having forty sires on the list with roughly fifteen stallions still living and producing . This sire line also represents more than 50% of the stallions on the list of stallions producing ten or more foals a year with twenty-eight stallions on the list of fifty-four. Nazeer is represented by many of the leading and most popular stallions of today. With all the living Nazeer sire line stallions on both lists, it will not be long before the Nazeer sire line is the number one sire line in production numbers. Many of these stallions are descendants of a long list of winning stallions going back to Nazeer either through Ansata Ibn Halima, Morafic or Padron. To emphasize the influence and popularity of the Nazeer sire line, keep in mind that two of the top three sires producing ten or more foals a year are also straight Egyptian and of the Nazeer sire line, and two of the top ten producing stallions of all-time are living and of this line, Padron Psyche and Magnum Psyche. However, the real loss to the breed as a whole is the loss of stallions representing the other nine sire lines that once appeared on the list.
While the other nine sire lines are not extinct, they are certainly underrepresented. Sire lines like Rabdan El Azrak primarily through Ibn Rabdan and Fadjur appear to have lost all living representatives of this line from the all-time leading sires list. However, on the list of stallions producing ten or more foals list Bellagio RCA is a representative of this sire line. To show the significance of this change in breeding, one must go all the way back to studbooks 17, 18, and 19, to find Fadjur listed as the number one producing sire. The last sire of this sire line to dominate the breeding year was Nabiel in studbook 38. Much the same fate can be said of the Ilderim, Barq, Ursus, Bad Afas, and Koheilan Adjuze sire lines not appearing on any of the lists with living stallions. These sire lines are represented by a small handful of legendary stallions, but they have failed to stay in the lime light of fashion. While these five lines do not appear to a single stallion among them producing ten foals a year, the Bairactar sire line does have one representative on the list of stallions producing ten foals or more a year, Titan AS. The Seanderich sire line is also represented on this list by one stallion, Bremervale Andornicus. And, the Latif sire line still appears to be producing and is represented by Virgule Al Maury who only produced one foal this past year and is no longer living. It should be noted that the Latif sire line is famed for racing along with the Koheilan Adjuze sire line and might explain their lower numbers and under representation as a sire line. Yet, Arabian racing is where the Skowronek sire line appears to have established itself also. On top of this, Arabian racing has generated another sire line to the list of sire lines producing ten or more foals a year, and that is the Dragon sire line through Grilla who ranked eighteenth on the list of stallions producing ten or more foals. He produced thirteen foals, but it is unlikely that he will ever be placed on the all-time leading sires’ list.
On another level, the data suggests is that there is no new rising sire line that will outpace or even compete with the current leading sire lines. The occasional new sire line that does produce a stallion that breaks into the all-time leading stallions list is bred to fulfill a certain niche in marketing, namely racing. It is easy to see that a stallion like Probat out of the Khulian Adjuze sire line should have produced a slew of stallions that would either compete with Ofir, Nazeer, Mirage and Skowronek, or create a niche for himself because he was a versatile stallion with a show record, but he did not create a sire line that went beyond himself. This can also be said of the sire lines that have only a few stallions on the list and then fall into obscurity. It also appears that the Ofir and Skowronek sire lines will continue their slow decline and eventually be outpaced by the Nazeer and Mirage sire lines. The occasional new sire line appearing on the list of stallions siring ten or more foals a year is not going to have any significant impact on the breed or major trends. It will remain a task of small breeders to maintain more obscure and less prolific sire lines since the breeding trends are and have been dominated by only four sire lines for the past hundred years.
